And then she kisses me. Not a Disney movie kiss either; this is another race car kiss. We stay like this for at least five minutes, my hands moving slowly up and down her back and hers pressing against my chest. Then I kiss her chin, her eyes, her cheeks, the corner of her mouth, her nose, until she starts giggling, then back to the races. I am both found and lost.

As I am climbing into bed tonight, the phone rings in the kitchen. It’s Jamie.

“Good night, Evie. Thanks for tonight. If you’re feeling scared about us, I could come back over and read you a story or something.”

“Good night, Jamie.”

“You had me at ‘hi.’”

I fall asleep wondering what he meant by that and remembering what it felt like to be in his arms…crushed and cherished.
